Extreme Cold Warning issued December 17 at 12:14PM AKST until December 21 at 12:00PM AKST by NWS Juneau AK * WHAT...For the Cold Weather Advisory, dangerously cold wind chill temperatures as low as 35 below. For the Extreme Cold Warning, extremely cold wind chill temperatures as low as 50 below expected. * WHERE...Klondike Highway mainly near White Pass. * WHEN...For the Cold Weather Advisory, until 6 PM AKST Thursday. For the Extreme Cold Warning, from 6 PM Thursday to noon AKST Sunday. * IMPACTS...Frostbite and hypothermia are likely if exposed to these temperatures. An extended period of freezing temperatures could cause ruptured water pipes. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Coldest wind chills will be at White Pass. Skagway and Dyea will see wind chills approaching 15 below to 25 below. with the coldest weather expected Friday into the weekend. Wear protective clothing such as a hat, face mask and heavy gloves or mittens if you have plans to be outdoors. To prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes they should be wrapped, drained, or allowed to drip slowly. Those that have in- ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above-ground pipes to protect them from freezing.
