winter storm watch in effect A late season winter storm is poised to impact much of the Kivalliq along with Kinngait. The storm will begin to affect southern regions in the watch area tonight, but the strongest impacts will be felt Friday and into the weekend. A low pressure system currently over east-central Saskatchewan will move northeastward towards the area tonight. Snow, strong easterly winds and blowing snow will spread across the Kivalliq tonight through Friday morning, with blizzard or near-blizzard conditions expected in a few communities by Friday afternoon/evening. In Naujaat, these same blizzard or near-blizzard conditions are expected to begin on Saturday. General snowfall amounts of 5 to 10 cm appear likely for western Hudson Bay communities, with amounts of 10 to 20 cm possible for Southampton Island and Kinngait by storm's end on Sunday. This watch will be expanded and warnings issued as the system approaches. ### Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility in some locations. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to [email protected] or tweet reports using #NUStorm. Avoid travel if possible. Protect yourself from wind, cold and disorientation by staying sheltered, indoors or with your vehicle.
